My intrepid partner Cathy and I, seated second from the back, along with our crew, navigate the roiling treachery of the mighty Kiulu!!!
My Kota Kinabalu friend Cathy and I went rafting down the Kiulu River on a pleasant Saturday in Sabah, Malaysia last week.
PictureCathy shows us the way.
It's a lovely 15 km river trip with mostly grade 1 and near-grade 2 rapids, providing a leisurely, fun ride, with some swimming in the cool river water.
A sunny sky and green, forested shores made a nice backdrop for the morning excursion. Not much wildlife to see, but lots of kids also enjoying a swim.
We booked through Sabah Booking, White Water River Rafting, with cost including transportation (about an hour each way), all equipment, and a tasty local-style buffet lunch, reasonably priced at less than USD75 for the two of us.

Hey Charlie, been a long time since I been on the upper Delaware, but I'll never forget a trip in the mid-'70s, must've been, me and Wayne Michaelchuck, his canoe. An overnight rainstorm swelled the river to raging and we nearly lost everything, barely made it that day. We swamped up against one of those rocky cliffs and floated down in the cold whitewater a long way. Quite an adventure. This river, the Kiulu, was nothing compared to that. Thanks for bringing back that memory!
