On the advice of my Greek language instructor -- yes, I am studying Greek -- I visited the village of Vamos, about 6 kilometers from my villa in Vryses, and noted how one is still a rural village much as it has been for centuries, while neighboring Vamos has begun promoting its picturesque and historic features for visitors.
Vryses is strictly a rural town serving the surrounding agricultural community with an attractive center square and the Vrissanos River bisecting the one-road business district. Its charming pastoral character attracts many visitors in the warmer tourist season, but if there's an office of tourism in town, I haven't seen any sign of it.
Vamos, meanwhile, has a bit more to work with and takes the tourist more seriously. It has a number of quaint old stone structures and cobbled streets that lend themselves to Instagramish snaps, and has a well-marked tourism office that actively promotes tours and cultural activities in the town and surrounding countryside.
Still, it's currently the off-season, and when I turned the doorknob to the office on a sun-dappled yet still cool Tuesday afternoon, it didn't budge. Yet an accommodating young lady did appear after a moment and let me in, "since you're here," she noted dryly. I said I was just looking for some brochures, which they had, and I even bought a wonderful map of Western Crete which is coming in handy.
So I ambled about the picturesque streets, took pictures, and had a delicious local-style lunch, all of which I present to you below -- the pictures, of course, not the lunch. I hope you enjoy them.
Now, I must get back to my homework before tomorrow's lesson. Sad to say it all still looks like Greek to me, but I probably shouldn't say that.
n ItaHere's my plate of Greek moussaka at the Cretan Traditional Family Restaurant in Vamos. It's a real local-style comfort food, like an Italian lasagna, with a bechamel sauce and parmesan cheese over ground beef (sometimes eggplant) cooked in a tomato-based sauce. Wow! With the local red wine and delicious homemade bread, I was comforted, and the short ride through the countryside back to Vryses was all the more enjoyable!
